How to Remove Backgrounds with Photoshop by Using the Extract Tool

A very popular thing people want to learn how to do in Photoshop is remove the background from an image. I personally use the Extract feature the most often because it works in most situations to provide the best quality for me.

So, here's how to remove a background from an image using the Extract Tool, this should take just a few minutes with most pictures.

1. Open Your Image in Photoshop

2. Select Image --> Duplicate (you can close the original if you choose)

3. Select Filter --> Extract (it's near the top)

4. A window will pop up with your image in it. The idea here is to trace the image you want to save as best possible keeping 50% of the circle on the background and the other 50% over the outline of the image. (If you take a minute to look at the options in the window you can zoom in, resize the brush size etc which will help depending on your image size, complexity and how important perfection is to your project).

5. Once you've traced out your image click on the little bucket in the top left hand corner of the window and click inside the image to fill it with blue, then select OK.

6. Create a new layer (Layer --> New Layer).

7. Click on the box next to extract in the history palette.

8. Now Select The History Brush.

9. Touchup the image with the history brush (it will bring back parts of the image that were in the 50% area you selected before).

10. All done! Now you can add a background image of anything you want!
